It's the end of the first week of August's awesome contest!!! Submissions are starting off slow.... we know everyone is trying to get that perfect picture and come up with just the right thing to say but remember... sooner you get in...the sooner you can rally your troops to begin their voting on August 30th! With further delay, I give you this weeks entries!
"Hankers is a rottweiler mix rescued by Saving Shelter Pets from a high-kill shelter in Georgia. He & his littermates had parvo, and sadly, Hank was the only survivor of his litter. He was just 4 months old and 25lbs when he came home with me. Three years later, he is now 85lbs and one of the sweetest, silliest dogs ever! While Hankers is still learning how to be an eco dog (he's just now getting into his organic dog treats!), our household has come a long way in the past few years... reuseable shopping bags, reusable water bottles instead of plastic, recycled paper for our printer, veggies grown from our own garden, Method brand for all our cleaning products....and the list is growing!"
(By the way, Hankers human runs http://www.savingshelterpets.com/ and we think what they are doing is wondering! They are all volunteer run. If you can help them out, they would sure love it!)
"This is a picture of our Italian Greyhound/Jack Russell Terrier, Stella and our Chihuahua, Leroy sharing a bed. When we rescued Stella, we quickly realized that it was pointless to buy another dog bed because she prefers cuddling in one bed with her doggy sister or doggy brother. Plus, who needs to crank the heat up in the winter when good old fashioned snuggling can keep you warm? BTW, did we mention that Leroy is a big believer of re-use/recycle (we just won't say what)"
"Hi, this is Buddy, 9 year old pug mix still thinks he is a puppy. He is @buddythepuggy from twitter. Buddy eats everything in the house and loves to be a garbage disposal err... recycle by getting into the trash. He loves nature and always has room for Grass. The Green grass in the garden/all over in the yard. I find him eating that a lot. He loves to run around naked, so that saves on outfits and he loves to feed the ants with his food so he loves to help nature by tipping over his bowl!! Speaking of nature, Buddy also believes in the natural smell ( TOOTS...who needs incense?) which IS all natural, believe me! He also sleeps in my bed (or his bed as he thinks). He loves to show everyone loves. (more eco-friendly than buying gifts!)"
(Buddy is one of our anipals on Twitter. He was very helpful recently, so we thanked him with a present, because of this we must disclose that he IS the rockstar puggie wearing the Rock n Roll Poochie Koo shirt on our site.)

Hey everyone! So, Bella thought we needed a good contest to spread the word on the importance of being an eco-pet. She suggested that people write in to her with a brief explanation of why they should be the face of Lucky Dog Organics for September! Do they commute to work via public transportation? Only eat locally made food? compost their poop? Or share your bed, your food and your lap so they reduce their carbon paw print? Best story and picture wins a $200 gift package of treats, toys, bedding, etc......ALL eco-minded stuff to bring your pet to that next level! They will also have their face on the home page of Lucky Dog Organics for the month of September!
So, send your stories and best pictures to Bella ... Bella@luckydogorganics.com . Pictures will be posted on the blog. Bella will choose the top 10 and then public voting will decide the fate of those 10! Public voting is Aug 30-31!
Be sure to check out our great eco store at www.luckydogorganics.com !

On June 3rd, the FDA released an announcement that it was approving Palladia (toceranib phosphate)for release. The first drug specifically developed for the treatment of canine cutaneous mast cell cancer in dogs.
Canine cutaneous mast cell cancer is responsible for nearly 1 out of 5 cases of canine skin tumors.Mast cell tumors can be often overlooked because of their small size. Many think of the lump as insignificant; perhaps an insect bite, however they can be a very serious form of cancer in dogs. Some mast cell tumors are easily removed, with no future reoccurance, while others can become life threatening. Always have your pet checked if a suspected bug bite lasts for more than a week.
According to Pfizer, Palladia is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor and works in two ways: by killing tumor cells and by cutting off the blood supply to the tumor. In a clinical trial, Palladia showed a statistically significant difference in tumor shrinkage when compared with an inactive substance (placebo). It is approved to treat Patnaik grade ll or lll, recurrent tumors with or without regional lymph node involvement.
The most common side effects associated with Palladia are diarrhea, decrease or loss of appetite, lameness, weight loss, and blood in the stool. Do not use on pregnant, lactating or breeding dogs. However, if this treatment will work for your dog I strongly suggest having your dog spayed and going ahead with the treatment. Your dog's life is more important. (stepping down from soap box and putting it away)
The interesting thing is that all cancer drugs currently used in veterinary medicine for humans use and are NOT approved for use in animals. In order to be used, an “extra-label” was allowed by the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994. This is an important thing for veterinary medicine as prior to this, vets were relying on human drugs and weren't sure of how effective or safe they would end up being. Prior to this approval owners were facing the best of bad options. Now they have their own.
Has your dog battled cancer? Share with us your stories of triumph and/or sadness.
